2011 – September – “Just Add Water” – 4th September Work Party Cancelled – see you at CStG Show

The trials by Veolia adding 2Mld to the river at Amersham commenced on Tuesday morning.  At that time, the natural seasonal regression of the river had caused it to dry back above Water Hall (i.e. more severely than last year, reflecting the dry weather last winter and hence lower groundwater levels this year).  This evening (Wednesday) a small but steady flow has returned past the wooden bridge opposite The Paddock and is headed towards Chalfont St Peter.  I understand that flows have also picked up significantly at Chalfont St Giles.  These trials are due to continue through much of September, so we can hope that we will see them show that constant flow through the valley is achievable with, frankly, not a lot of trouble.

To date, take up for working on Sunday has been slow with a number of people otherwise engaged this month.   Bearing in mind that several of the regulars will be on MRA duty at the Show on Saturday, also wishing not to disturb the natural course of the trials, and, in any case, thinking that this is a fairly disheartening time of year to be trying to clear the overgrowth, when nature will help us over the next couple of months, it seems sensible to cancel an organised event on Sunday.  If you were looking forward to the exercise, perhaps a little tidying along your favourite stretch would provide a rewarding hour.

If possible, please note now the work parties scheduled for Saturday 8th October and 20th November when we should be able to put things in good order for the winter and hence Spring 12.  At that time, we will be specially tackling the leat above Mill Lane and one or two other difficult areas ……………… and, in November, we are promised a team of reinforcements from Goldhill Youth Group which will be super.

Meanwhile, we look forward to seeing you at the Show on Saturday  …. when the river should be in good heart adjacent to the field and there will be more to report regarding the trials.
