The river is similar and disappearing rapidly under overgrowth in several reaches. As proposed in our WhatsApp group a couple of weeks ago, and depending on number of sign-ups, we will have work parties on some or all of this Saturday 5th July, Tuesday 8th, Saturday 12th, Thursday 17th and Saturday 19th. We will be generally tackling the usual vulnerable reaches downstream of Amersham and working to keep healthy flow as long as possible – hopefully at least thru Chalfont St Giles for the rest of the year. We do need a good turnout so please let me know which ones you might join us for (together with your shoe size for waders) and I’ll send detailed “orders of the day” by the evening before each one.Groundwater levels are still above average for the time of year but falling now given the restricted rainfall – not much more than half last year’s equivalent 6 month total. Along most of the corridor, including through Chalfont St Giles, the river is bright and clear as you would expect from a good chalk stream. However, many have commented on the murky water through Chalfont St Peter. Having considered a number of theories, we are thinking the most likely cause is cattle (and other animals??) trampling in the margins of the watercourse through the fields between the villages.A big thank you to all who helped with our stall at Chalfont S Peter Feast Day and also at the “CSP – the Wild Side” event the week before. Our display of mini-beasts from the river attracted lots of attention at both and we are delighted to welcome a good number of new supporters. Also, the thanks to those who helped with our two evenings with Chalfont St Giles Cub Scouts where we prooved that about 18 bathfulls of water per minute are currently flowing under the stone bridge, observed surprising little creatures under the stones, found different plants by the river and played a tough ball game. We have signed up for a stall at Chalfont St Giles Show on 6th September and hope for some support with that. By the way, a special shout out for Debbie and Jean for all their work on the patch beside the ford by The Greyhound – I’m sure they’d love some gentle help to keep it under control.Stop Press News tonight is of a sinkhole affecting the A413 by Deep Mill Diner – less than 100 m from the river! – see photo below For info, it seems to be over a mile from the crossing of HS2 under the A413.Our next “not-a meeting” – informal, relaxed chat with a drink putting the Misbourne and the world to rights – will be in “the Shed” at Chalfont Park Sports Club, SL9 0QA (What three words = covers.reach.island turning off Chalfont Park just before GX Golf Club) from 7.15pm on Monday 21st July. We hope this change of venue may give us somewhere where we can hear each other better – don’t worry: it has fully stocked bar including draft beers. As always, all welcome, especially newcomers! The WhatsApp chain has been particularly active and interesting this month. If you would like to join it, just let me know.Looking forward to seeing you soon, by or in the river,Best wishesBobPlenty of jobs like this waiting for us!
